Indianapolis IN NPC Meeting Great Success! Let me begin by thanking Indiana APWU State President Doug Brown and his Executive Board for hosting an outstanding NPC meting. Attendance was up from the last few conferences and a full agenda was discussed and debated among the delegates.
Special thanks to Vice-Chairman Mark Case who presided over the conference in my absence. By all accounts Mark did an outstanding job of moving the conference along and allowing full debate of the issues before the delegates.
Training went well on Saturday and I greatly appreciate the hard work and efforts of all our trainers. Safety/Health - Donnie Dotzler & Ray Knabbe; Retirement - Judy McCann & John R. Smith; & Understanding Health Insurance - Rocky Midget. Job well done and thanks again.
Thanks to my State President and my Local VP Bob Johnson for all his assistance and expertise in setting up the video link between the delegates and myself on Sunday morning. It worked out great. Thanks for his help in operating the video and computer equipment during the conference. Thanks for your dedication and friendship.
The delegates unanimously endorsed Obama for President of the United States of America - A motion submitted by Kenny Terry (Toledo OH Area Local) was debated and unanimously adopted by the assembled delegates. Great motion and now let's all work collectively to bring about "The Change"!
Colorado Springs President Rob Preston made a motion to donate $500.00 to the APWU Auxiliary's "Safe Nest" project. This is the Auxiliary's National Convention Human Relations Project and the Safe Nest group is a protective shelter for men, women, and children based in Las Vegas. The NPC will make our presentation at the National Convention this August.
A motion was made by Philly BMC President Vince Tarducci to allow for the refund of the $50.00 registration fee to delegates who are unable to attend the conference after paying the fee, provided the request for the refund is made by the Thursday prior to the conference.
A motion was made by Bruce Clark to encourage the National APWU to publish a list of the 100% affiliated AFL-CIO local and state organizations at the National Convention.
Michigan State will host the June 2011 Central Regional NPC meeting. For a list of all future conferences please go to our web page and click on "future conferences".
The Audit Committee reported to the delegates on Monday. Their report was not finalized, as there were some outstanding issues and questions surrounding the last NPC meeting in Sacramento, CA. I will schedule a meeting while at the convention between all the parties involved to resolve any and all outstanding issues. However, the Audit Committee did report that the books and financial records of the NPC are in proper order. The delegates discussed a number of issues involving the responsibility of expenses between the host and the NPC, the consideration of reviewing future contracts, and the standard of properly documented receipts. Further discussion will occur at future meetings with recommendations from the NPC leadership and the Audit Committee.
The next meeting of the National Presidents' Conference will be the NPC Caucus at the APWU National Convention - Saturday, August 16th from 6:30pm - 10:30pm. Bally's Hotel & Casino – Skyview Room 3 & 4 (26th Floor) Open To All Local & State Presidents & Vice-Presidents. No Registration Fee For The NPC Caucus. Look forward to seeing all of you in August.
Lastly, thank you to everyone for their well wishes and kind words (some not so kind, but very funny) I am hopefully on the road to full recovery and hope to be able to attend the Convention next month. I'll keep everyone posted and look forward to seeing all of you in Vegas!
John H. Dirzius Chairman NPC
